head on over

to the scrapbook and cards today blog, i'm the guest blogger this week and here's a peek at my challenge for the readers. you'll have to click on the link to see the whole thing :) in other news, i got my hair cut on thursday (catch the double meaning in the title now? how clever can i be!?!) and i promised my wonderful stylist holly that i would wear it curly every day until i got back from orlando.i know that in orlando, no amount of straightening iron will get me the look i'm going for, so i'm just going to deal with it and go curly for the week.

i am not sure what my issue is, but i definitely have an issue with going curly. it takes a lot longer and i feel like one false move and the facade will dissolve and leave me with a droopy swag of hair. see i have some curl, but not enough to just wash and let air dry like some of my curly headed friends. i have to primp and baby it. i shouldn't complain, when it's all done, it does look quite good actually. i'm just always a bit worried that it will show it's true self at some point. holly said my hair's like her's. instead of the frizzy around the face and nape of the neck, it's totally straight. i have to add a few curls there to make it all even.

i've got a history with curly hair, i was a teen in the 80s. need i say more? when i was in high school, my boyfriend's cousin-in-law libby was my stylist. i loved libby, maybe even more than i loved her cousin-in-law. she knew how to make me look good. she gave the best perms, and boy, did i love my permed hair. due to my natural curl, i held a perm very very well, and i had a schedule. i knew that a month after my perm, my hair would have the perfect spirally curl, so coveted in the 80s. so i'd plan my perms a month in advance of any big event and i'd look perfect. i sure did miss libby when daryl and i were forced to break up (hee hee) due to my family's move to texas. after that i had to go back to my mom, which really wasn't as bad as that sentence makes it sound. i could have stayed with her all along, but... so every time i'd come home from college i'd get a perm. in between i'd use my hot rollers, which worked pretty well to cover the grow-out. when i got married, i cut all the curl off and stayed short for a long time (much to kelly's disgust). when i started growing it out, i went with the straight style--i even had a good bump-it look going on in the back occasionally, but it was all tease and spray. i stayed with this look until my heart failure in 2000, then i decided it would just be easier to get a perm again. i had enough adjusting to change to do, i needed the comfort and ease of curly hair. so i got a perm for a few years, until a friend commented how old fashioned perms were. i contemplated the comment and had to agree that i wasn't seeing many permed heads walking around, so i let it grow out and have gone with straight hair ever since. it was a glorious day when i discovered the straightening iron! i didn't look back.

until we went to switzerland a couple of summers ago and my convertor did not work. i panicked, but found that the cut i had worked well for going curly. it almost looked like my old perm, just a little less tight of a curl. with some styling products, it would stay quite well.

so that's where i am currently. trying the curly hair this week and next, because i know no matter how much i straighten it in orlando, it will go wavey. so'll try to maintain some semblance of control by embracing it. it takes longer, but probably not that much longer. i get a lot more attention with it curly too. it's interesting.

You look good with curls. I'm like you - a little natural curl, but not enough to be curly. I guess that means we have more options than most! You go Emily, embrace those curls!!

I had a poodle perm in the 80s, but since my hair is naturally stick-straight, it never achieved the "perfect spiral perm" look.

I'm looking forward to my poofier hair in Orlando-- not curly, but somehow more substantial.

I love your LO and the technique used. That is my new goal, try new techniques.

I too am a child of the 80's who loved my perms! I have the same type of hair and live in South FL. I adore the flat iron, but often opt for the curls that take MORE product than anything to get it to last all day. I feel your pain, but love your cut. Good luck in FL with the humidity. The curls should work perfect!
